There is no escaping it, social media is taking over people’s lives, and as a business, you want to be right there in front of everyone. So the natural thing to do is to jump on board and get your business on Social media. You spend time setting up a Facebook page, Twitter account, LinkedIn Profile, Snapchat Story, Youtube Channel and all the rest and get real excited for how this is going to drive your business and generate so much more sales for you. You start posting on all these platforms and spending relentless hours every day online. It’s going to do wonders for your business, sure everyone is doing it, it’s easy!
But then something happens. Your posts don’t get seen, your tweets don’t get retweeted, and nobody cares for that snapchat about how they need your business in their life. What’s happening? I’m doing everything right, but it’s not working….wrong!
Unfortunately it’s not as simple as just setting up on these platforms and starting to post up information. Remember you are using social media as a marketing tool for your business and like every other marketing campaign you try, you can’t just jump in. You need to do your homework FIRST and then see what works for you. Each platform works differently and has a slightly different following, so you need to use each platform differently. For instance Facebook is the king of “social”. It’s very much a fun, light hearted platform and should be used that way. LinkedIn is as professional as it gets and should be used to make new connections that can benefit your business. Twitter is somewhere in the middle. It’s great for getting your information further, interacting with people and networking with businesses.
Each platform has a different metric and a different target audience that is relevant to your business. Figure out what your target audience is on each individual platform and then decide what you want from them and how you are going to target them. The type of content you use will NOT be the same on each platform. Different target audience, different objective, different call to action, equals different content.
You can waste so much time online. Make sure the time and work you put into social media is generating results for your business. If it’s not, then take a step back and look at why? Start at the other end of the scale, with your target audience, and figure out what you want from them. Then decide how you are going to get it, and more importantly, how social media can help you get it.
